Endangered & Threatened Species, and Sensitive Habitats
The proposed quarry will adversely impact many federal and state endangered and threatened animal species including but not limited to the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly, Western Burrowing Owl, Golden Eagle, and Coastal California Gnatcatcher.
Sensitive plant species present in this area include Otay Tarplant, Variegated Dudleya, Dunn’s Mariposa Lily, San Diego Barrel Cactus, San Diego Marsh Elder, and Tecate Cypress.
Sensitive habitats include the Mule Fat Scrub, Coastal Sage Scrub, Southern Mixed Chaparral, Chamise Chaparral, and Grasslands.
The nearby Otay Mountain and Otay Mountain Wilderness, just west of the project, and the San Diego Otay Open Space Preserve, the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, and the Otay Mountain Ecological Reserve all host numerous endangered and sensitive wildlife, native plants and special habitats.
